Humming Bird Blessing

Good Morning,

Well, I opened the sliding glass door early this morning, headed onto the back deck to sit down and send out a reminder that Friday Silent Meditation & Prayer is this evening at 6pm (that is still so, come on over!), and as I was standing there, somewhat pre-coffee, looking at the long flat disc of brilliant sunlight sliding through the bank of clouds to the East, a little hummingbird flew up to the door, hovered in front of me, and then flew right past me into the house.

Well I never. He was so bold and unafraid. Birds have flown into my houses over the years, but they are always discombobulated and frantic, flapping at the windows and landing disheveled on doorframes.

Not this little guy, he flew right in, missing me by six inches, and then hovered in the spot where the group meditation is held, facing me directly as I regarded him, forgotten coffee mug in hand, flip-flops on the threshold, and then zoomed out. He paid a precursory visit to the pre-bloom hosta, then flew off.

Maybe it's a good evening to come to meditation if you lean toward the hummingbird persuasion?

For me, ok, I'll take it as a sign, and a pretty animated one at that.

I tend to not dwell on signs too heavily as my teacher Adyashanti would probably put them in the "spiritual party favor" category. The idea is that when someone begins on earnest on a spiritual path there are often the freebies to 'get them in the door'; things such as increased synchronicities, divine coincidences, increased spirit animal visitations, and encountering signs and symbols that confirm the journey.

These things are real and good, and they tend to mark the beginning of a spiritual path and are deeply validating.

However there comes a time when God or the divine says, 'ok, I've come to you, now you come to me', and at that point the party favors tend to fall away. This is not a bad thing. It's a honing, or a strengthening for the person. It can feel devastating, especially if you are the type of person who is prone to these spiritual delights, it can feel like you have been abandoned by the divine, but it is not so. You are being asked to a deeper and more mature relationship with God.

Back to my little buddy of the morning. What direct energy humming birds have! They are the antithesis of indecisiveness in their movement, and the incredible effort they take with each second of purring wingbeat is a testament of pure dedication to their direction.

Perhaps this hummingbird speaks to you. For my part, I felt a loud and clear 'Yes! put the Silent Meditation & Prayer invitation out into the world, put your full and decisive energy behind it!'. And even the meditation space itself was blessed by a brilliant black and green little bird, humming through the circle.

So come on over, sit with your fellow humans in presence and a willingness to open to something greater. It is food for the soul. A hummingbird darts about, feeding on the nectar of flowers, the creme de la creme, and is unabashed in its pursuit of sweetness.
